Meeting the needs of the “whole” person
Your Local Resource for Comprehensive Stroke Care
Methodist Hospitals’ Stroke Center is a multidisciplinary unit that demonstrates our nationally recognized commitment to providing unsurpassed stroke care. Our neurologists and neurosurgeons have extensive experience in treating all types of strokes. To assist patients and their families during this difficult time, we provide a stroke coordinator who facilitates patient care from admission to discharge.
We seek the best possible outcomes by addressing the needs of the “whole person”. As part of our comprehensive care, the Stroke Center is supported by medical personnel involved in education, rehabilitation, therapy, nutrition and social service.

Acute Stroke Program
The time between the onset of stroke symptoms and treatment is critical for recovery. Methodist Hospitals works with and trains EMS personnel so that they can identify and transport stroke patients to the Emergency Department as quickly as possible. Through coordination of efforts, a team of Emergency Department physicians dedicated to stroke patients initiates the most appropriate care path within 20 minutes of the patient’s arrival.
Dedicated Units
Patients at both Methodist Hospitals campuses receive skilled care from nurses who are specially trained to care for stroke patients. Our dedicated Neuro Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides expert care to neurologically impaired or unstable, acutely ill, trauma patients, and patients on medication drips that require titration and frequent monitoring.
Prevention and Community Education
Methodist Hospitals is actively involved in preventing stroke through community outreach. The centerpiece of this effort is our monthly seminar series conducted at our hospital campuses and throughout the year at Methodist-sponsored health fairs and other locations. To register for a seminar, call 1-888-909-DOCS (3627)
Seminars include:
- blood pressure check
- carotid bruit and peripheral artery disease screening
- education about stroke symptoms, risk factors and lifestyle changes to reduce risk
- distribution of risk factor and stroke screening support materials
Specialized Training & Equipment
The greater array of stroke interventions available at Methodist makes us the destination of choice for stroke treatment in Northwest Indiana, especially for patients who are more than three hours past the onset of symptoms. Our biplane catheterization technology can extend the window of treatment for many patients to 24 hours, allowing them to regain vital functional abilities.
Innovative Diagnostic Modalities
Advanced and innovative diagnostic modalities, coupled with expert evaluations and skillfully applied solutions help us to produce faster, better outcomes with greater patient comfort.
Philips Azurion B20/15 Biplane Catheterization Lab
The biplane catheterization lab is a technology considered the “Gold Standard” for neurovascular intervention. The system directly converts x-ray data into much more precise three-dimensional digital images. This allows more precise clearing of blocked arteries, removal of clots and placement of stents, improving patient outcomes.
Siemens Definition Edge CT Scan
The 128-slice CT system at Methodist can produce intricately detailed, 3-D images of internal anatomy. These images are then combined to form a three-dimensional view of the patient’s anatomy for the physician to analyze allowing better detection of a wide range of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, metastatic cancer, appendicitis, decreased blood flow to the brain, and renal stones as small as 1-2 mm in size. This system also enhances physicians’ ability to perform high-quality imaging for musculoskeletal, neurological, and pediatric diseases, including Dual Energy for post surgical neurological cases. Also, offered for our stroke alert patients we have RAPID AI to enhance stroke detection in real time, allowing early and time sensitive treatments.
Diffusion-Perfusion MRI
These MRI procedures allow for more accurate, earlier diagnosis of strokes and measurement of blood flow to the brain to improve the success of stoke and brain tumor treatment.
